Aunt Bessie decides that she and her closest friends should have an enjoyable night out.
Elizabeth Cubbon (known to almost everyone as Aunt Bessie) has made many friends over the lifetime that she’s lived in the village of Laxey, but few have been as close as the ones she’s made recently. Bessie relied on Doona Moore, Hugh Watterson and John Rockwell to help her through several recent murder investigations she’s found herself caught up in. Now she wants to treat them all to an open-air performance of a Shakespearean play on the grounds of historic Peel Castle.
Aunt Bessie decides that it doesn’t much matter what show the troupe is performing as long as she and her friends can relax and have fun.
Two members have recently left the theatre company. Now the troupe has thrown aside its usual repertoire in favour of a play written by one of their own. When those two former members appear in the audience, though, someone decides to get rid of one of them for good.
Aunt Bessie decides to give the show another chance, but a second performance almost ends in a second tragedy.
With all of the suspects blaming one another, and several of them turning up on the doorstep of Bessie’s cottage, it’s time for Bessie to decide to solve this murder herself.
This is the fourth book in the Isle of Man Cozy Mystery Series.

The author tries her hand at a mystery with a limited set of suspects and a set of clues that could point at any one of them. Ms Xarissa does a delightful job of keeping us guessing and involved from beginning to end. The suttle humor is wonderful. The locale is enchanting. All in all well worth a visit. And best of all, there are more volumes to enjoy in the series following this one. There are also a couple of novellas staring some of the minor characters that I want to try. I love Aunt Bessie, and particularly covet her cottage on the beach.Product details

Aunt Bessie Decides An Isle of Man Cozy Mystery Book 4 edition by Diana Xarissa Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
Sorry Shakespeare for quoting you in this review; however I feel justified because the author used a Shakespeare Repertory Group as the scene for this book. I found the following line in the book, which I never thought I would get too, “The group hug that followed felt like a suitable good bye” a proper way to summarize and end the book.
There were 200+ pages of drinking wine eating biscuits, and visiting. Behind these tiresome scenes were a murder in the repertory group, a questionable accident, and hints of mattress tag. At last Aunt Bessie takes pity on the reader and miraculously solves the mystery ala Agatha Christie.
I think the author missed the chance to really present an exciting mystery for the reader. Thus I am giving this book a two star review and can’t recommend the book to any reader.
Like most of the British mysteries I've read, this book was both well-written and well edited. The story was intriguing, with no clear clues to indicate the murderer. Emphasis seemed to be on character development and interaction, so some readers might find the pace of the mystery too slow, especially as there was a distinct absence of blood, gore and sex. The setting, on the Isle of Man, was new to me, so I found the descriptive passages fascinating all in themselves, and the close friendship between the four main characters and the way in which it contributed to the solution of the murder was beautifully illustrated. I especially enjoyed the girls' night, with the ladies' intimate reveal to each other of their past loves and relationships; it was touching and realistic. All in all, a very enjoyable cozy.
This is the second or third Aunt Bessie story I've read. As others have mentioned, I didn't find it as interesting as the others. Aunt Bessie and her police friends were endlessly getting together over lunch or dinner and hashing over the suspects. Enough already! (It's a wonder they can get around, considering the massive amount of food they consume.) It just wasn't well-written enough to keep my attention, and as others, I found myself eventually skipping through the last rehash. Bessie has become "nicer" than in the first book. I think I miss the outspoken feistiness. She's now a little bland, I think.
I love cozy mysteries, that's why I read this, but the author needs to tighten up her writing and maybe take some writing classes. On a positive note, I barely noticed any typos or grammatical errors...a rare treat in these EBooks!
Also, according to Aunt Bessie, she was 17 when her love died, had a gentleman court her 10 years later, and then WWII broke out...which means she was born in 1911 or 1912. If this was written in modern times, which it was, she is really old!
This fourth book in the series is pretty good, maybe actually a 3.5 due to the cast of wacky characters being rather implausible. A traveling drama troupe all have means, motive and opportunity to murder and all show up with wild stories to tell Bessie. It reads almost like a madcap comedy. And the secondary plot lines serve to develp the main characters nicely. One irritant is the flawed forensics which at this point is in every other book.
In general this series of books is very light reading, with too much detail about food ( do we need to know who ate what?) and poor quality dialogue (again, do we need to know who phoned who?). However, the characters are engaging and the settings are charming. If one reads them with a gap of a few weeks between them, the weaknesses are not too annoying. Books A - D are decent. Books E and K are very improbable. F and G are relatively dull but further an underlying story arc which -just- redeems them. H, I and J are better skipped.
This time around Aunt Bessie, Doona, Hugh, and Inspector Rockwell are off to see a play in a real old castle Hugh is bringing his girlfriend Grace, and the Inspector is bringing his children.
Everyone is having a great time until one of the people in the audience near Aunt Bessie is found with a knife in his back. Then a few days later an actress falls during a performance.
So Aunt Bessie, Hugh, Doona and the Inspector all set out to solve the murder.
Well written and oIl am looking forward to getting to the next book in the series.
I had hoped for lots from this bool an elderly spinster like Miss Marple, or maybe a dotty old lady, or maybe a cozy English mystery, or at least an interesting travelogue of the Isle of Man. I got none of this. Everyone in the story looks to Aunt Bessie for her cleverness and her sympathetic nature. It's s hard to see any of that. About all she can do is brew a good cup of tea. I had hoped this might be a humorous mystery. Yes, it had humor -- exactly one joke, repeated several times, about the prodigious appetite of one large constab!e. I learned nothing about the Isle of Man. The characters were boring, the most interesting one being the murder victim. Finally, the solution to the crime was pretty speculative. It wouldn't have been enough for an indictment. Thank goodness, the murderer chose to confess. Tho book was a waste of my time
The author is excellent in bringing enough information from previous books so even if you have not read them, you know what is going on. She is a wonderful story teller. She has the ability to keep you turning pages. Her characters are realistic. Her stories appear to be actual. I love her stories.
