Drunken Crows eBook Sheri Mitchell Black Hollen Pope Cristy Pendergrass

From the first page, Drunken Crows begins building a world that is somehow delightful and also disturbing. The main character Sara Jane is wholly believable, and I found myself cheering for her from the start. Sara, an overly sheltered young woman, is surrounded by a group of characters that have personalities, flaws, and dialects all their own. From her Granny’s homespun wisdom to her mother-in-law’s brassy strength, this book has plenty of relatable characters. Even God himself has a role that includes compassionate listener, trusted confidant, and at times an ironic hand of justice. Sara needs all the help she can get! I can’t remember another antagonist that made me hate him one minute and feel sorry for him the next like D-Wayne, her infuriating husband.

Drunken Crows delves into the not-so-pretty side of small town Southern life by addressing the poverty and lack of education that have shaped these characters and made their actions and motives seem authentic. The story never shies away from the grittiness and pain that comes with dysfunctional family behavior that is passed down through generations. It also brings to the forefront the idea of freedom and how different it looks to each character. Some embraced their freedoms without even realizing they had it like the well-meaning Rosalee, while others thought they free but where in a prison of their own making like the Avon hairbrush wielding Mama.

I enjoyed spending time in the world created by the author, and I can’t wait to read more from her soon. I hope she writes a prequel and tells more about what happened between Eula and Jake!

Drunken Crows eBook Sheri Mitchell Black Hollen Pope Cristy Pendergrass Reviews

Drunken Crows draws clear characters and paints lovely visuals in this first novel by Shari Black. Written in a Tennessee mountain country dialect, you can hear the characters speaking in your head. Although all the characters share the same dialect, each one has a unique set of idioms and speech patterns that gives them distinctly different voices. The basic story line is delightfully embellished with backstories and parables that illustrate life in the mountains, from the sweet and funny to the scary and cautionary. The abundance of strongly rendered female characters from granny to crazy momma to young woman coming into her own to good ol' gals make this a fun summer read.
I love this book! It was filled with characters that had a true personality. Once I started it, I couldn't put it down. I just had to know what happened next to Sara Jane!
I am in a stress filled time in life right now and the story of Sara Jane and D-Wayne was an escape for me. I loved the book and characters, a definite must read. Look forward to this authors next book.
Thank you so much for this book I loved it I recommend it for y’all to read loved Sarah Jane
As I was reading this book I was constantly reminding myself that this was the author's first novel. The story in the book was very entertaining and kept you coming back to it day after day to see what happens next to Sara Jane. The story had an easy flow to it as the author started the story in the present, took you back to the past and then merged the story right into the present again. The characters were very believable and one would have to have an intimate knowledge of that dialect to keep it from sounding "hokey" through the entire book. I'm looking forward to the author's next book.
