Zero Recall The Legend of ZERO Book 2 eBook Sara King

So i finished this book about 10 days ago and am still thinking through it! I loved the depth and complexity of book 2. I will say I read the Moldy Dead first, which provided a lot of context for both background and one off the principal characters - Forgotten. Please read it first, it's short and will take you 45 min or an hour, but lays so much of the ground work for Zero Recall.
I loved the intricacy of the characters and plot lines. Sarah really wove a deep book that's enjoyable at first read as much ad it will be after the fourth! What appear as slow moments aren't - they're crucial twists in the plot or setting up several future scene.
This book also has humor! Several times I had to pause from laughing so hard. This book is much lighter in tone than Zero 1. just in case you were thinking of skipping because of how gritty the first book was, don't!
I'm excited for the next one!

Zero Recall The Legend of ZERO Book 2 eBook Sara King Reviews

Ok, I admit, I'm a Sara King fan. She's turning me into one of her parasites for sure, and the story of Zero's life has me hooked. The first book showed possibilities in the human reaction of an unexpected alien invasion. The taking of children captives to train and turn into soldiers was within a system contrived to control conquered worlds and study the new species. The method used is cruel by human standards, but added to the overall character growth within the first book. Kept thinking about this character after finishing the story and was curious how it will continue.
In Zero Recall, Sara doesn't disappoint. The growth of Zero continues as a soldier pitted against insurmountable odds, but this time he has a crew of misfit aliens to accomplish his tasks. What makes this book different from the first, and enjoyable to read, is the interaction of all the alien characters. The plot was believable and well formed with several surprises. ~ I should have seen the the ending coming, but Sara surprised me yet again with a satisfying story and an ending that felt right. And yet, it's not over yet. There are more foretold prophecies to live.
I missed my chance to review Forging Zero as I returned it before remembering to do it. However, it won't hurt to review them both here since my review would be largely the same and I don't need to give anything away to do it.

Both books are bathed on blood and guts - much of it children's. Right from the beginning too. In Book 1, we meet our anti-hero Zero (Joe Dobbs) part of the worldwide child recruitment by invading aliens. The 1st book largely focuses on the training of these kids to make them into soldiers. The reader is given wildly vivid detail of body parts being removed, decapitations, etc. Keep in mind the kids are 5 to 12 except for Joe who, though he's 14 is kept on with no real explanation. Book 2 picks up many years later with these kid/adults now fighting in the tunnels of their captor's enemy. Most of them killed. Even Joe is gruesomely sliced and diced but miraculously survives after alien medical technology intervenes and his friends find him some "parts". Aside from the repeated bloody battles, Joe forms some real relationships with his essential group of 5 comrades. They even overcome some of their deepest instincts and habits becoming loyal to Joe. Some even though it means their death.

Of these 2 books, I liked Zero Recall better. If you could look beyond the constant violence, this was the only place where I felt we were going somewhere. Perhaps forging a few meaningful relationships that would hold the key to what these stories are about. Alas, it was not to be. By the end of this one, things change yet again.

One of my biggest complaints here is that we're left unclear as to where this is all going. Some things you read indicate one thing but other things you read seem to contradict that storyline. Having now read Book 3, I can report that it doesn't help us understand what this is all about. I believe that these books could use a lot of editing which should pare down the idea into a central theme. There is a lot of branching off that only results in confounding the reader without adding to understanding our hero or clarifying the main plot. I, for one, feel very strongly that these first 2 books could be merged into one stand-alone book without losing much. It's covered in a lot of layers of violence, talking about weapons, describing injuries in graphic detail. Lose some of that and some bits and pieces that don't add much, move on to the climax and conclusion. You have here the makings of a good read but it got cluttered along the way.

By the way, despite that the aliens use growth treatments to hurry the growth of their bodies, they remain their same mental age. So what you end up with is thousands of 5 to 12 year old kids with the bodies of super sized adults fighting wars in tunnels. I don't know many 5 year olds that wouldn't dissolve into terror no matter how big they are or how much you threaten them. Mental development is at least as important and aside from many mentions of the urinating or defecating out of terror, there's no mention of developing their mental growth even as Zero comments repeatedly that they're just kids. If you're going to write about aliens this advanced would you have them understand that humans develop slowly compared to other animals.
Did I like it? Yep! Do I recommend it? Yep! I wish all my friends were reading it too. It they were, we would be speaking the language in the book. It's hard to laugh and enjoy something this good and then try to explain it to someone else. People can appreciate the humor of the situations that I'm laughing at unless they have read the book. The characters and the relationships are that complex. Until you understand a Sentinel, a top Vaga assassin, a baga, and how they interrelate, you can't begin to appreciate the situations in this book.

This is really great writing. You get to see the characters personalities, their flaws, their failures, and their internal struggles. If you put this book down, it will be because you can't keep your eyes open. Or because you have looked at the clock and realized that you MUST be awake and alert at work tomorrow, and you only have a couple of hours left to grab some sleep.
Zero Recall is one of those books where you get to the end and you have to do a double take. Pieces of information fall into place and you're left wanting to read the entire book again (and maybe even the end of Forging Zero). As the author states, she hopes it will blow your mind, and it does.

It's not just the super, amazing, mind-blowing ending that makes this book rock though. The interaction between alien species is believable in its execution, and at times heartbreaking, at times hilarious.

I'll say one thing. Sara King really knows how to carry you along through emotional roller coasters. There are really low lows, and you think you will never recover. You never QUITE recover to fairy-tale-happpy-ending status. But you do find that it was all worth it. Because you care about her characters. They are real. They could be sitting next to you on the couch while you're reading, elbowing you at 2am, and saying, "Eh, eh?! Don't go to sleep yet, wait'll you find out what I did next."

This book is truly a masterpiece.
