My 8-year-old loved this book! She said she'd give it 6 stars if that were an option. Normally, she's not into "girly" things like princesses, bows, pink, purple, etc. She loves Minecraft, coding, science, dragons and dinosaurs, so I was surprised when she requested this book but she heard about it from another book I picked up on a whim at Target (also by one of these authors) and both have been a huge hit! I am thrilled! She is a voracious reader and read this quickly and immediately asked for the second book in the series. She lit up today when I asked her about the book and she launched into telling me about the kitten, which is known as dritten - a kitten and dragon. The drittens have special powers apparently. This is what I would call good, clean reading - perfect for my family. I highly recommend!Tags : Upside-Down Magic (Upside-Down Magic #1) [Sarah Mlynowski, Lauren Myracle, Emily Jenkins] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. <DIV>From <I>New York Times</I> bestselling authors Sarah Mlynowski, Lauren Myracle, and Emily Jenkins comes the hilarious and heartfelt story of a group of magical misfits.<BR /><BR /> Nory Horace is nine years old. UpsideDown Magic UpsideDown Magic #1 Sarah Mlynowski Lauren Myracle Emily Jenkins 9780545881715 Books Reviews
The students who go to this school are learning to use their own unique magical powers There are a few students whose powers don't fit into the "norm." They are in a "special" class to help them with their "upside-down" magic challenges. The plot of "Upside Down" is an allegory for learning to respect and appreciate each individual's differences. The students and their teacher (who is also "special") learn to care about and support one another while the greater school population also learns to appreciate them. There are hilarious outcomes, painful experiences and sometimes a triumph overcoming a negative moment. This book will appeal to both boys and girls, and would be a great read-aloud for ages 6-9.
Got this because I like this kind of writing style. It's cute and funny.... sad. It may say 8 and up is more grown up than you think. Aside from the magic, children do have a lot of pressure pushing in on them. Not just at school but at home as well. I was kind of like the kids in this book. I went to a special school for special kids. I had it all. No friends, bullies, feeling invisible. The first book I read by myself was Watership down. It's about rabbits but what story it was. Ever since then I've been hooked on books. I'm looking forward to the next 3 books.
My fourth and fifth grade students loved this book as a read aloud in our class. Tons of fun, with a good moral. Perfect for what I wanted there are plenty of characters to compare and contrast, many exciting events to describe, and a solid theme to discuss.
My students laughed so hard when Skunkephant Nory... well, you'll have to read it to find out! I don't want to spoil the delight for you!
We read one chapter a day, and every day I had to hear the same thing, "One more chapter, please!"
When the book fair came to school, my students all were so excited to see that book 2 was available. It quickly sold out.
I have book 3 on pre-order, and already my students are "dibs-ing" for who gets to read it first.
Nory lives in a world of magic. When you enter six grade you get take a test to see which school you can join. For her there is only one choice, Sage Academy, where her father is the headmaster and her older brother and sister attend. But, the test doesn't go well, and Nory is sent away to live with her Aunt and attend a public school with an Upside-Down Magic class, for kids with wonky magic.
Full of embarrassment, Nory will do anything to be able use her fluxer magic to turn into a nice, normal kitten. Instead, all she makes are mixed animal hybrids that eat the furniture. In a class with other misfits, Nory tries to fit in, only to find the rest of the school dislikes her class. her teacher Miss Starr tries to teach them to think out of the box, work together, and use their unique magic, but all Nory wants is to be normal.
My Thoughts-
This is a delightful fantasy book. I love worlds of magic, and this world is very interesting. There are several layers hinted at; Miss Starr tells of a time when unique magic was valued and there were more than just 5 magical groups. Hmm. I want to see things progress and develop in the rest of the series.
Nory is a typical kid who looks up to her brother and sister and wants the approval of her father. I was so saddened by her father's reaction to her. He sends her away and then never contacts her again (at least in book #1). Nory is left on her own, with an Aunt she's rarely seen. However, her character is stalwart. She takes the time to train, to master her magic, and just when she thinks she'll be allowed into normal classes, she realizes being different isn't so bad. A great theme here.
This book had me laughing out loud at several different points. The bizarre things that the kids in the Upside-Down Magic class experience is often funny and the weird hybrids Nory changes into are great! I really liked this book and I'm giving it 5 stars!
My fourth graders loved this book, girls and boys alike. Many went on to read the second book, Sticks and Stones. One of my readers noticed at the end of the second book that there is a third book in the series, so I am checking this out for her. Good characters, great vocabulary, humor--a good fantasy, even for struggling readers who were really proud to read such a "big" book.
