Caroline drinks too much and has a strained relationship with her mother, Isabelle, and sister, Madeline. Her little sister Ellie vanished sixteen years earlier, and no one in the family has recovered. Isabelle thinks she sees Ellie's picture in a magazine and begs Caroline to search for her, while Madeline wants to help the police prosecute her alleged killer by declaring Ellie dead.
HOW TO BE LOST is the story of a family that was never whole before Ellie's disappearance, but since she disappeared they relate almost as strangers, broken strangers who exist rather than live. I enjoyed Caroline's first person narration, she's open and honest about her many faults. Her hardness is understandable, although at times frustrating as I wanted her to be more emotionally available even while understanding why she was not.
Amanda Eyre Ward has a pleasant writing style, easily relatable. She interspersed letters from a character Agnes, which at first seemed to have nothing to do with the plot. It took me three quarters of the book to figure out Ellie's fate, but I kept wondering until the last sentence if I was correct. I do wish the book hadn't ended so abruptly and there was more closure.

How to Be Lost A Novel Amanda Eyre Ward 9780345483171 Books Reviews

I kept trying to be interested in the characters but simply could not bring myself to really care what happened to any of them. I know so many readers have rated this novel as inspiring, suspenseful, exciting,..all those adjectives that intrigue readers...but..sorry ..none of those applied to my idea ....I actually gave up about 3/4 of the way through which is unheard of for me.
I loved the twists, turns hope and losses. She writes a well written novel in that sometimes you just don't get closure.
This book was unlike anything I'd read in the past. It realistically depicted family and sibling relationships, and the narrator, Caroline Winters, was at once deeply troubled and hysterical. I was engaged in this book from cover to cover, mostly because I really wanted to know what happened, not so much because the writing was anything extremely memorable. But the story was engrossing and the ending did not disappoint. A quick summer read.
I could not put this down. The characters drew me in and the story unfolded in the most delicious and engaging way possible.
I had to read this book twice as I was uncertain when it ended about some of the important details the author had given which slid right past me the first time around. I find that I still have a question as to the denoument. I'm not sure whether it's because the author hasn't tied up all the ribbons or because I may not have understood. In any case it is such a beautifully plotted novel with believable characters and great dialogue. I absolutely loved it and highly recommend it.
Comparisons between this and "The Lovely Bones" are inaccurate and undeserved. While Lovely Bones has thoughtful, engaging characters and a plot line that intrigues the reader, this novel has neither of these and leaves you feeling empty. You don't really care what happens to the main protagonist in this book as she is superficial and unrelatable.

The plot jumps from one third person point of view to another, making the story jumbled and aggravating.

Oh, and the author cuts the book off right when something in the plot actually happens that is interesting.

If you want something like the Lonely Bones, then read that.
"Mom it can't really be her," I said though my heart was hammering in my chest.
"But what if it is?"
I shook my head and stared at the picture. The girl looked like me, like Madeline. She looked like my mother."

This was indeed a page turner with many exciting characters. We meet the Winter family in this book; the children about to make an escape from their parents whom, they decided were treating them with indifference and taking them for granted.
They plotted from the day before, and were set to meet after school, but when meeting time came, the smallest sister Ellie did not turn up as expected.
From that time onwards, things go topsy turvy in the Winter family as Caroline and Madeline and their parents look for answers to what could had become of Ellie on this day.
Daughter Caroline, refuses to give up her search, especially when she sees a photograph in a People magazine of someone resembling what her sister would look like at twenty years. She travels far and wide to unravel this mystery, but towards the end the mystery is solved. Get the answers in this exciting drama.
